So what is a snob?

Date September 16, 2007

When we initially considered where we would live in the KC area, we began looking in Overland Park. My little sister who had lived here (but in Missouri) about a year told me that if we lived in Johnson County Kansas, everyone else in the KC area would think we were snobs. My immediate thought was, “Oh, that must be the better place to live then. Overland Park it is!” Even when we were looking for apartments, the guy at the complex made a reference to being a “JoCo snob,” a nickname given to those of us residing in Johnson county by the people living in Lee’s Summit and surrounding areas. I do have to admit, the wealth here is absolutely insane. My neighborhood is full of really nice houses, but they look a bit dumpy next to the many mansions found within a mile of here. This is a serious divide in the area and a ridiculous one at that. So, I feel the need to clear this up.

I was really intimidated when we moved here. I assumed everyone I met would be hateful, entitled, and awful. But, I have yet to meet an unkind person here in Johnson county. I am sure the area is overflowing with snobbery, as most areas are. Even in the town Jeremiah and I grew up in, there were snobs. There were rich people that truly did believe that their possessions somehow made them better than those without. Not true! And, there were plenty of poor people who were just really hateful (and probably jealous). Jeremiah and I have met plenty of people while we have lived here and they have been awesome. We have friends that have more wealth than we will probably ever have and we have friends just like us (live here, but are still on a tight budget). They are all nice. Even the wealthy ones. If living in so many different places and in so many different financial situations myself has taught me anything, it has taught me that you aren’t what you have. People really shouldn’t be judged based on their wealth or lack thereof. Doesn’t everyone know people should really be judged on how good they look (kidding).

haha. so very true. what a life lesson you have learned over these many years!

i love that it sounds like you are making new friends quickly! my new neighborhood is definitely not the snob area. interesting stuff for sure going from west end high rises and 500,000 condos to a much more modest area.
