My gym adventures
August 4, 2008
When Jeremiah and I lived in Chicago (before children), I was once asked by a girl I worked with when my baby was due as she lovingly patted my stomach. I wasn’t pregnant. Shortly after, I joined a gym and have since had a steady gym membership and attendance. Nobody asks me now when my baby is due, which is nice. But, in going to the gym, I have long avoided the classes offered at every gym. I have just always thought they weren’t really for me. But, after spending years doing intervals on an elliptical followed by weight lifting, I decided to mix it up a bit. I have decided to try every class my gym offers. First up, Fitness Pilates!
I love pilates. I have been doing pilates for years and especially love doing pilates when I am pregnant. It keeps my hips/lower back strong and keeps my stomach muscles from tearing during pregnancy (it happens often, that is what a full tummy tuck fixes). Anyway, I went to pilates at 8ish am last Friday morning expecting it to be a challenge, but assumed myself to be pretty good as well. A woman of about 50-something came in to teach the class, and then I (stupidly) assumed the class would be easier than I thought. No. That little gal really kicked my butt. There were some moves I had never seen before, including this one. I was able to do it, but it was not necessarily easy.
This morning, I took Cardio Kickbox with Martha! Martha, Martha, Martha….ouch. I will start by telling you that Martha is pretty intense and after watching her cardio kickbox I would NEVER want to meet her in a dark alley. She went extremely fast and throws punches better than most guys I know. She was also a lot of fun, which was great. At one point, I was standing on one leg, trying to kick with the other (without touching my leg back to the ground between kicks) and wondering if I would be able to get back up if I happened to fall over. When the class was over, she jokingly told us we would all be thinking about her in the morning. Yes Martha, I am going to be hurting in the morning, but I will definitely be back next Monday morning.
Tomorrow morning, Cylce 60 at 8:15am. I hate indoor cycling, so that should be interesting.

Um, can I just say you are awesome? I almost got hurt watching what Pilates rocking is. Let’s just say I have a little work to do before I’m back in shape. You rock!
