Conversations with Breckin: Pulling a Henry

Date December 1, 2008 by jennifer

Breckin told his first joke this weekend. To be completely truthful, it wasn’t a great joke. But, he was laughing so hysterically at himself that I had to laugh too. In our family, telling a terrible joke is called “pulling a Henry” in honor of Henry. Henry lives by the philosophy that a bad joke is better than no joke at all. Apparently Breckin has also adopted this philosophy. Anyway, on to the best joke Breckin has ever told. (Really, you had to be there)

Breckin: Hey mommy! What does the poker say?
Me: I don’t know Breckin, what?
Breckin: POKE! (as he simultaneously pokes himself in the eye and dies laughing)

Thoughts on Heroes

Is it just me or is Mohinder’s character absolutely ridiculous this season? How did he become so completely stupid in a matter of months? I want the old Mohinder!

Claire is WAY too fake baked and wearing too much make up. Her face looks crusty. Ew!

What is the deal with poor Hiro? I realize he is he unlikely hero in all of this, but did they have to make him 10?

Could the story be developing more slowly? It is like watching a soap opera, but worse. The cliff hangers aren’t even cliff hangers.

What happened to the glory of season one?

Priceless!

Being woken up by a 2 year old girl in the middle of the night……..-10 minutes of sleep

2 year old girl insisting upon sleeping with you and that you “nuggle” her……..-30 minutes of sleep

Waking up the next morning to a 2 year old girl trying to spoon you……..priceless

Conversations with Breckin: Apple Promo edition

This morning, when Breckin woke up, I had to show him my birthday present. He loves gadgets and anything electronic/computery.

Me: Breckin, do you want to see what Daddy gave me for my birthday?
Breckin: Sure, Mommy.
(I get the present out)
Breckin: Whoa Mommy! That’s a new IPod!
Me: It’s called an IPod Touch.
Breckin: Wow!!!! (insert enormous expressive eyes here) I really like the IPod Touch. Can I play with it?

We played with it together until Arwyn woke up. I think he was almost more excited than I was.

15 years ago, they walked away………

and now, they are back! November 11, 2008, Sprint Center, 15,000 SCREAMING 20-30 something women, 10 guys that were somehow suckered into being there, and the best boy band ever! What a night! In the power and light district of Kansas City last night, the signs were everywhere. Groups of girls in their late twenties/early thirties wearing I LOVE NKOTB t-shirts filled the restaurants and streets. Lots of giggling and talking about how they never got to experience NKOTB when the first time around. Now, they are much older, some drinking LOTS of beer, some pregnant, some crying like crazy. It is obvious that the New Kids are playing to a much different crowd this time around. Well, same exact crowd actually, but much more mature, sort of.

I had a blast last night! My friend Kate, little sis Stephanie, and I headed downtown last night to see NKOTB. I have to say that I was entertained every second of that concert. They realize that they are surviving on nostalgia and completely accept it. They make fun of it a little and have a really good time together. Despite what many think, they still have an insane amount of talent. They are all (aside from Joe) in their late thirties, but can still sing and dance at the same time as if they are still 20. Their performance has improved so much since their Today show appearance 6 months ago. They clearly love performing and love performing together. I was specifically mesmerized by Joey and his obvious passion for what he does. Loved it! I screamed, I danced, I jumped up and down, I sang along. It is amazing at how long a song can remain in the memory. I hadn’t heard some songs in at least 10 years and I knew every word. So much fun. The 12 year old living on in my heart couldn’t have gotten a better birthday present. Here are some pictures!

Check out the sea of ladies surrounding the piano!

See how happy we are! (left to right, Kate, Me, Steph)

Conversations with Breckin

This morning, Breckin got off to a rough start. He was throwing his second tantrum in one hour because I gave him a banana for breakfast after he had asked me for a……banana. Anyway, here is how the conversation went.

Me: Breckin, if you don’t stop acting this way, I am going to take the TV away today and the computer games. You won’t be able to play them for the rest of the day.

Breckin: (through the tears, a sad look on his face and a quivering voice) But Mommy, the TV is too big for you. You can’t carry it. Its too heavy.

I left the room and burst into laughter. I immediately called Jer and told him what happened.

That is NOT what little boys are made of. I am not even sure what that nursery rhyme means, but it definitely doesn’t describe my son. Breckin is so sweet and so contemplative. Here are a few moments I have had with Breckin recently that I would never trade.

Yesterday, Breckin and I went to the store in preparation for movie night. We were in the movie section and I had intentions of buying a movie. Once every 6 months or so, I try to get a new kids movie to slowly build the selection. Yesterday, I wanted to buy Kung Fu Panda. When I picked it up, Breckin said, “I’ve seen that one already. Mommy, we have plenty of movies at home. Just put it back.” I put the movie back, happy to have escaped from spending the money and delighted to know that my son is actually listening at the store when I tell him to put something back. Very cute.

Tonight, I was putting Breckin to bed. Our routine includes a story then some snuggle time. He loves snuggle time and so do I. We were snuggling when I told him that it was time for Mommy to go and I gave him a kiss. He wrapped his arms around my neck and said, “You stay right here Mommy.” He pulled my head back down and began playing with my hair and rubbing my back. I didn’t move a muscle. All of this affection coming from a little boy who told me at his preschool Halloween party to “Go back home!” I absorbed every second.

Dear Mr President Elect,

I hear you are in the market for a dog. Let me tell you, we Wheaten Terriers are adorable, loving and full of energy. We are also a bit ornery, so we can keep you and your family on your toes. But, the secret is, if you keep us tired, we don’t cause much trouble. Seriously, look at how sweet we are. Just check us out on The Early Show! I know right. Way more adorable than all of those other dogs. There is a great Wheaten rescue organization in KC you should check out.

Sincerely,
The Boz

Arwyn has officially decided it is really best to go #2 in the potty as opposed to her pants. Rock on!

Tuesday New Kids On The Block are coming to town and I will be there with some great girlfriends. Get your crimped hair, banana clips, and gigantic buttons ready girls. THEY. ARE. BACK. Whoo-hoo!

According to Breckin’s preschool teacher, he has now decided to sing songs and participate in activities with the rest of the class. What can I say, he does his own thing and I embrace that part of him. Hooray for Breckin being socially normal!

My mom is coming next weekend so Jeremiah and I can have a date night. Grandma’s rock!

I turn 29 next weekend and am still in denial about that being a mere 1 year away from 30. Hooray for my ability to deny reality! (insert backflip here that I cannot possibly do anymore because I am in fact almost 29)

Bosley turns 1 in two weeks and Jeremiah is pretending like he will only be celebrating Boz’s birthday and that he has completely forgotten about mine. Congrats to my husband for his terribly wicked sense of humor!

Jeremiah and I board a plane directly headed for Israel two days after Thanksgiving. Well, not directly headed. First Atlanta, then probably somewhere in Europe, then arrive in Israel almost and entire day later. Praise the Lord for I-Pods!
