Today was a bad day. Breckin was not feeling well today. I think his throat hurt a bit more today than yesterday because he had fewer pain killers. Arwyn woke up on the wrong side of the bed and was cranky from the start. Throwing fits and all. Breckin woke up in the middle of the night coughing, which hurt. He started crying and I ended up sleeping in his bed with him. I feel so sorry for him and I really look forward to about a week from now when he is feeling much better. Today, I put him down for a nap, but he never slept. Then, tonight Jer put him down around 7:30. He never went to sleep. He would scream for me over something trivial (my pillows were in his bed and he wanted them gone!) and hurt his throat by screaming. When he screamed the third time, I just made him come downstairs and lay on the couch with me while I watched the Olympics. My hope was that he would fall asleep. Well, it is 10:45 and he has just now fallen asleep. I had to make him close his eyes and within seconds he was out. I have now put up foil (tacky I know, but necessary for the next few days) in his bedroom window. I am going to put a fan in there before I lay him down. My hope is that a completely dark room with some white noise will encourage him to get the rest he needs. I am completely drained now though. I have prayed for patience and understanding more times today than I can count. Jeremiah goes back to work tomorrow, so hopefully those prayers will be especially fruitful in the morning.

This morning we woke up bright and early to take Breckin to the outpatient surgery center where he would have his tonsils removed. The anesthesiologist and surgeon were truly very wonderful and kind. Breckin was not a fan of being there at first, but eventually relaxed a little. We waited in the pre-op area for about 30 minutes before he was taken back. We didn’t get to go back with him, but they did everything to entertain him during his few minutes awake in the operating room. Once we got home, he told me about a balloon they had and that they blew it up “really, so big!” (his exact words) He even got a pink gas mask, just like he wanted. Immediately after the surgery, he was pretty inconsolable and it took a while for us to get him to drink. Once he started drinking again, we were able to come home. Once we got home, life returned to normal, just with much less activity. He had 4 sorbet pops and who knows how many popsicles. He seems quite fine, but something tells me that has everything to do with the tylenol with codeine they gave him. He will be pretty regularly medicated for the next few days, and will hopefully be feeling better in no time.

Immediately after the surgery, the doctor came out to talk to us. He said that Breckin’s tonsils and adenoids were absolutely huge. When an ENT says that, you know it must be true. I guess his tonsils were so big that they were actually blocking his airways. The doctor said that at night, he was truly struggling to breathe and not getting much rest at all. I asked the doctor about his “failure to thrive” issue and his response was, “Oh, he is going to start thriving now. He will be a completely different child.” Finally, maybe a little relief from what has been years of struggling with Breckin’s weight and eating. Thinking about the possibility of him growing properly, when at one point I thought there wasn’t really any hope, almost brings tears to my eyes. I look forward to see what the coming months will bring. I will keep you posted.

Remember a while back, I mentioned Breckin’s ridiculously large tonsils. Well, once I had the appointment with the specialist and scheduled the surgery to have them removed, I was informed that our insurance wouldn’t cover it until we had their plan for a year. So we had to wait 6 months. The time has finally come and Breckin will be getting his tonsils and adenoids removed on August 8. I took him to a different specialist this time because I didn’t really care for the personality of the first guy anyway. Upon looking in Breckin’s throat, he exclaimed, “Now those are big tonsils. The biggest I have seen all day!” I immediately asked him if that means we get some sort of prize or discount. I feel really great about Breckin having the surgery, the doctor and the hospital he is going to. I look forward to walking in his room at night and not hearing the loud sound of him snoring. I know he will eat better, sleep better and feel better once this is all over. I am sure the only thing Breckin will enjoy is the endless stream of 7-up, popsicles and ice cream.
